To pave the way for computer science professionals

Information technology is in crisis. In order to close the qualification gap in industry, the Schaffhausen University of Applied Sciences (SIT) has created a new Master (MSc) in Computer Science and Software Engineering to better prepare graduates for management tasks. The new program was introduced in September 2020 and is open to students with a bachelor’s degree in computer science or software engineering who want to become the next generation technical leaders.

The Master’s degree in Computer Science and Software Engineering is the first master’s programme to be introduced by the newly established SIT University at the Technology Center in Schaffhausen, Switzerland. SIT was founded by entrepreneurs and focused on bridging the gap between education and business.

SIT, chaired by Acronis CEO Sergey Belousov, and its program are specifically designed to address the industry’s current challenges, including the lack of future leaders who have entered the software market.

SIT’s consultants, which comprises a network of computer, software and technology organisations, suggested that existing computer science courses should not prepare graduates for management positions. As a result, potential candidates are not eligible for positions such as Chief Security Officer (CSO), Product Manager (CPO) and Chief Architect.

Although many computer science graduates have technical knowledge, only a few have the necessary leadership qualities such as management, entrepreneurship and production management.

SIT’s industrial network has taken up this challenge by recruiting directly for its organisations. To solve this problem, SIT’s MSc in Computer Science and Software Development was strategically designed under the leadership of SIT’s impressive Board of Directors.

SIT wants to offer its graduates the knowledge needed to create and develop their own high-tech companies, and this entrepreneurial spirit is necessary in the field of information technology, according to Professor Bertrand Meyer, head of SIT’s Software and Security department. The SIT Council will have a real impact on the future success of our students by connecting them to their own computer and technology networks.

Unlike traditional master’s programmes, computer science and software engineering at SIT have been developed as a way of working on roles – whether as a CSO, CPO or perhaps as the founder of a brand new technology start-up. At SIT we invite the brightest and most ambitious graduates to join us in September.

The SIT Master’s programme is in line with the traditional European higher education system of Bologna. The program, which is based on a two-year full-time program, follows the traditional academic year and is therefore ideal for students currently holding a Bachelor of Science or Engineering degree.

In addition to fulltime study, students can opt for the accelerated option, which allows them to obtain a full master’s degree in three semesters.

The thesis required for a Master’s programme can be written based on the student’s experience in his own start-up or with one of the SIT network partners such as Acronis, Citrix, Microsoft and McKinsey & Company. This level of interaction with companies is extremely rare for the highly technical masters of prestigious specialized universities.

Unlike traditional models, the master course is available as a blended e-learning course with lectures on the SIT campus in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, in live streaming or as a recording for offline learning.

The course is unique in that it also offers the possibility of obtaining a double degree at one of the SIT partner institutions – Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in Pittsburgh (USA) or the National University of Singapore (NUS) in Singapore.
